Celebrating L’s birth with #Baker Days
I’m sure all parents would agree that the birth of a child is a very special time in family life, and of course the birth of L last month was an extremely important and exciting time for my family. When we were approached by the lovely Andrea at Baker Days, I thought it would be great to mark L’s birth with a special personalised letterbox cake that we could all enjoy.
Now what is clever about a letterbox cake from Baker Days is that they can be sent through the normal post and fit through a standard size letterbox. They are described as:
Cunningly clever little cakes for one or two of you. This small, perfectly proportioned cake is the baby of our family. It’s the thoughtful gift that will totally delight a loved one. This brilliant cake, as it’s name suggests, can arrive through the post, just like a Birthday card. Cakes by post, it’s the future!
I was now even more intrigued about receiving our cake!
Choosing our cake
You may think selecting a cake is an easy task, but after having a good peruse through the extensive choices on the Baker Days website, I was still none the wiser as to what I wanted. There were some lovely new baby celebration cakes to select from that can be personalised with your own wording, and you can even upload your own photo. This is a common theme with all the different occasions that Baker Days can cater for – they have a selection of already designed cakes that can be personalised with words, or blank ones for uploading photos and words. They also have an extensive range of birthday cakes with themes to match all ages and tastes.
After my failure to be decisive in my choice of cake, the lovely Andrea suggested adding a special photo and to leave the design to herself and their baking team. So I decided on a lovely photo of NOM’s first cuddles with her new baby brother and left the design to Baker Days. I did this by email but the website is fully equipped for taking your details for personalising any cake design by clicking on the ‘personalise your cake button’ that is located on each cake design you click on. Each design has full instructions on how to upload photos and adding wording but please bear in mind that you need the photo saved to your computer to upload, and that there are character limits to the wording which depends on the design selected. You also have the option (like me) to email Baker Days directly with your personalisation – they are more than happy to help you with your selection to ensure that each cake you select is made to your specifications.
Once you have decided on the lovely cake design, its time to decide on the best bit – the filling. There is a selection of fillings available that suit different tastes as well as take into account those with food allergies by offering gluten wheat and dairy free options. A basic sponge filling is free whereas the other options occur an extra charge, depending on the filling you choose but all additional costs are clearly stated, as well as the ingredients in each.
Receiving the cake
As advertised, the letterbox cake was delivered through our letterbox and in a plain white box which is perfect if you’re trying to keep the cake a surprise for someone. Opening the box I was surprised to see some hidden extras that I wasn’t expecting. Not only did it contain the cake, but also a little celebration pack containing balloons, candles and a novelty blower as well as a little card. The cake came in a nicely presented cake tin as well as being wrapped in clear wrapping to keep it fresh.
I loved the finished product and NOM was excited to see her face on the front of the cake. I had to admit that the cake was smaller than I expected but it was big enough for our little family and all dimensions are clearly stated on the website for you to check suitability before ordering.
The cake was easy to cut and the filling we received was the chocolate chip sponge. I must admit that I’m not a lover of icing and couldn’t try that bit of the cake but the rest of my family who tried it assured me it was lovely and not too overpowering as it sometimes can be in other cakes. Then came the chocolatey goodness of the filling. It was tasty yet light and I can definitely say it was a big hit with everyone who tried it, especially NOM!
I love the idea of the letterbox cake and I think it’s the perfect option for those catering for a small gathering or if you are wanting to give it to a special person who has a passion for cakey goodness! I cannot fault the taste and texture of the cake as it was beautifully made and tasted lovely. I am sure anyone who receives one will be as happy with how it tastes as much as me and my family were. I will admit that the size of the cake may be an issue, particularly when being charged at £14.99 but the quality certainly reflects this in part of the price being paid as well as the extra touches you receive with it (balloons, party blowers and candles). All cake designs are also available in larger sizes should you need to cater for a larger group. Delivery for a letterbox cake is also free if 2nd class post is selected (1st class post is additional £3.99) if being delivered within the UK with international deliveries incurring extra charges dependent on where in the world it’s being delivered.
If your more of a cupcake kind of person, Baker Days can also cater for this in their cupcake section with a wide selection of different cupcake designs to choose from (which again can be personalised to your specifications). They are available by the dozen and come complete with complimentary cupcake stand and each are individually wrapped.
