Sofia the First Micro Playsets – A Review
As part of our Sofia the first twitter party on September 18th 4-6pm, NOM and I were lucky enough to try out some of the new range of micro playsets that have been released. Now of course NOM is a big Sofia the First fan and when she saw the fabulous range of playsets we had been sent, she was eager to get started playing with them. The playsets are packaged with the signature purple and Sofia the First branding making them attractive and easily recognisable.
We first tried the wand with the earrings and ring set as NOM is currently obsessed with dressing up. We really loved these playsets. The wand is attractive, sturdy and easy to hold. When you turn the wand on and move it, it lights up and makes a lovely sound which NOM found great in her imaginative play. The earrings and rings were also just as pretty and NOM loved being able to put the earrings on herself (they are clip ons) – this is a big plus for me as it promoted her independence. I even tried them on and found them comfortable to wear as they didn’t pinch like other clip on earrings (even with the size of them!). The ring was nice and chunky so were good for small hands and I must admit that NOM looked lovely when she had the full range on! You get one Sofia the First character in each of the sets with the earrings having an additional 2 characters so buying both sets would give you a nice range of characters to use between them all. I would say these are more for dress up purposes rather than small world play but they definitely got the seal of approval from NOM and I!
As with the magic wand and the earring/ring set, the bracelets follow suit with mainly being for dress up purposes. They come in 3 beautiful designs (horse carriage, ring pillow and tea cup) which come complete with one Sofia the First miniature that sits inside the design of the bracelet. The bracelet part is made of flexible smooth plastic which can be bent to fit any little person’s wrists and again, they are attractive and easy to use by little fingers. NOM found these to be a big hit too but we did find that some of the lids to the main part of the bracelets came off easily but they were fixed by simply re-attaching them to the hinges again.
Now these sets couple up as dress up and a small world playsets. The tiara can be worn with or without the heart which acts as a little playset for using the 3 characters that come with the set in imaginative play. Again, this is attractive to wear but we found the tiara to be quite small and only just fit NOM. The heart is easily removed from the tiara and easily added back again. It opens up simply and easily, and NOM enjoyed using her little figures in the playset. You can also wear the heart as a necklace (which is included in the set) so this is quite a versatile playset – great for any little person who enjoys dressing up as well as imaginative small world play.
Now the Amulet looks lovely upon first impressions. As with the tiara set, it couples as a dress up piece and as a necklace as well as for small world imaginative play as it opens up into a scene for the little figurines (3 included) to be used within in. Alas, opening the amulet is very tricky and definitely requires an adult to open – sometimes even we found it difficult. It did come off its hinges a few times too as you needed to push quite firmly forwards to open it, so I’m not too sure how durable it would be after little hands play with it. The set inside is pretty and NOM enjoyed using it once opened, but she did get frustrated with keep having to ask for help in opening it as she would flit from using it as a necklace to playing with the set inside. It is still a nice playset and if your little one enjoys small world imaginative play then it is still worth trying with them, just keep expecting to be asked to help open it!
NOM loved playing with both the tiara and amulet sets and did spend short bursts playing with both!
The Sofia the First micro playsets are a lovely addition to any little one’s toys, especially if they enjoy role play. All the playsets are suitable from 3 years onwards and I would happily buy the magic wand, bracelets and earrings/ring sets for a 3 year old. But I think the Amulet and Tiara are more suited for 5 years onwards as I think NOM found these a bit too fiddly to play with at her age, and was much more interested in using the dressing up aspects of the sets (but I would say this is child dependent and if your child is into their small world play then these would be ideal!)
Prices range from £6.99 to £19.99 (dependent on what playset you would like) so they would make great stocking fillers or even main presents for Christmas or birthdays. Great for any Sofia the First fan!
